I have been engaged by issues of place and space for many years. My 2009 book, Book of This Place: The Land, Art, and Spirituality, was a sustained paean to a particular place where I lived with my husband David Thorndike from January 1999 until September 2013, when 4 days of sustained hard rain brought devastating flash floods. Theories of place and place-making, from Yi Fu Tuan to Edward Casey, have intrigued me for decades. And artistic work such as Jacquelynn Baas and Mary Jane Jacob outlined in their 2004 book, Buddha Mind in Contemporary Art, has prompted me to reflect anew about the directions of my own current work.
