I painted the watercolors for this artist book in 2006, following the deaths over an eight-month period of six friends and family, including my mother and closest friend. Printing a digital edition of 57 was completed in 2007 on unique papers such as Japanese surface gampi, and I sewed envelopes for each book in 2008 with handmade papers such as Bhutanese mitsumata. I gave many of these books as gifts to friends, and a few remain for sale. The individual prints could be framed, hung with pushpins, or sewn together as flags. I think of How to Practice Compassion not as a precious object, but as an impermanent presence, like life itself.
