This drawing consists of 21 layers of written prayers, all of which are obscured by the repetitive process of writing. The first layer is a prayer often called metta, written in a drawing of my body on black Arches paper. “May I be filled with lovingkindness, may I be well. May I be peaceful and at ease, may I be happy.” The second layer is a dedication from Shantideva's Way of the Bodhisattva and covers the entire surface: “And now as long as space endures and as long as there are beings to be found, may I continue likewise to remain to soothe the suffering of all those who live.” The top layers of the drawing consist of a traditional Buddhist refuge prayer: “In the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, I take refuge until enlightenment. By the merit of generosity and so forth, may I attain Buddhahood for the benefit of all beings.”
