Deborah J. Haynes

Collaborative Art Project

Since January, I have been part of a collaboration with eleven other artists who live in and around Boulder County. Each of us created a handmade journal on a particular theme, and these are circulating amongst us through December 2021. At the end of each month, we pass the journal we have worked on to the next person on our list. My journal explores the themes of Loss, Suffering, and Death. (See #longmontpopupart2021 for some samples of our work on this project.) I completed these two pages for another woman's journal on the theme of "Threshold."

The right side of this image contains the following text: I am compelled by the threshold between life and death, where living meets dying. My tasks: to prepare my mind for this journey that I must take alone, to reduce attachment to my aging body, and to not leave a mess for others, which means dealing with all that I have accumulated. I do not know when I will die or how, but crossing this threshold is inevitable.
